LD Lawn Care's Comprehensive 8-Step Lawn Health Program

Below is an outline of our specially designed lawn health program. This program begins in mid-late February and progresses at 4-6 week intervals between treatments. While the ideal situation would be to begin treatments with step 1, it's never a bad time of year to start focusing on the health of your lawn. Feel free to contact us at any time of the year for a free analysis and consultation. We would love the opportunity to give you a lawn that you can be proud of and enjoy to the fullest.

Step 1

Pre-Emergent/Fertilizer

Step 1 includes an early spring-late winter granular pre-emergence plus fertilizer application. Pre-emergence helps prevent weeds from germinating during their growing season. This granular fertilizer application will help the turf green up quickly and maintain thickness to choke out weeds.

Step 2

Fertilizer/Liquid Air-8/Humic + Weed Control

Step 2 includes an early spring granular fertilizer, RGS, and humic application plus weed control treatment. Fertilizer will help keep the turf green and thick while the Liquid Air-8 helps loosen the topsoil to promote healthier, deeper root growth. Humic acid works in the soil to enhance its water infiltration capabilities and water holding capacity. Weeds are treated with a selective post-emergence herbicide.

Step 3

Fertilizer/RGS + Weed Control

Step 3 includes a mid-late spring fertilizer and RGS application plus weed control treatment. Fertilizer will help keep the turf green and thick while the RGS (Root Growth Stimulator) will provide the turf with additional nutrients that help promote root growth. Weeds are treated with a selective post-emergence herbicide to eradicate any pests that may have popped up between treatments.

Step 4

Fertilizer/Liquid D-Thatch/Humic + Spot-Treat Weeds

Step 4 includes an early summer fertilizer application that utilizes both fast & slow release products at lower rates to prevent turf stress/damage during the warmer summer months. Humic acid works in the soil to enhance its water infiltration capabilities and water holding capacity. This application also includes liquid D-Thatch which helps break down built up thatch in the lawn that can prevent nutrients from reaching the soil. Visible weeds are treated with a selective herbicide on an as needed basis utilizing spot-treatments.

Step 5

Fertilizer (Fast & Slow)/Liquid D-Thatch + Spot-Treat Weeds

Step 5 includes a mid-late summer fertilizer application that utilizes both fast & slow release products at lower rates to prevent turf damage during the warmer summer months. This application also includes liquid D-Thatch which helps break down built up thatch in the lawn that can prevent nutrients from reaching the soil. Visible weeds are treated with a selective herbicide on an as needed basis.

Step 6

Fertilizer/RGS/Humic + Spot-Treat Weeds & Grub/Insect Control

Step 6 includes a late summer/early fall fertilizer and RGS application plus spot treatment of any visible weeds. Fertilizer will help keep the turf green and thick while the RGS (Root Growth Stimulator) will provide the turf with additional nutrients that help promote root growth. Humic acid works in the soil to enhance its water infiltration capabilities and water holding capacity. Visible weeds are treated with a selective herbicide on an as needed basis. This is also the crucial point in the year where a grub control product is applied. Grubs cause great amounts of damage to lawns by feeding on turf roots. They also attract other destructive pests that feed on them by digging up and/or tunneling through the topsoil and turf.

Step 7

Fertilizer/Liquid Air-8 + Weed Control

Step 7 includes a mid-late fall granular fertilizer and liquid Air-8 application plus spot treatment of any visible weeds. Fertilizer will help keep the turf green and thick while the liquid Air-8 helps loosen the soil to promote broad, deep root growth. This granular fertilizer provides nutrients over a longer period of time, assisting the turf in winding down and preparing for colder months. Weeds will be treated with a blanket application of a selective post-emergence herbicide.

Step 8

Pre-Emergence/Fertilizer + Spot-Treat Weeds

Step 8 includes a late fall pre-emergence plus fertilizer application. This pre-emergence application will help prevent winter weeds from germinating while the slow release granular fertilizer maintains a hardy, healthy, and green turf during the colder months. Visible weeds are treated with a selective herbicide on an as needed basis.

Pre-Emergent Applications

These applications provide a barrier to prevent weed seeds (Crabgrass, etc..) from germinating (growing) in the lawn. Pre-emergent products may be applied multiple times throughout the year, typically starting in February/early March, depending on specific weather conditions and individual lawn needs.

Turf Type Specific Fertilizer Applications

Fertilizer gives your turf the nutrients it needs to achieve the lush, dark green, healthy appearance we all desire in our lawn. Whether a typical fescue lawn, bermudagrass, or combination of different turf types, we can customize a fertilization schedule to meet your individual needs and keep your lawn in pristine shape.

Organic Fertilizer Applications

If you desire a lush, green lawn using organic methods, we have a program for you. This plant-based, slow release fertilizer provides the nutrients your lawn and soil need without the use of traditional chemicals. This is more of a long-term approach, but when paired with frequent aerations and over-seeding can prove to be very effective at choking out weeds and creating a full, healthy lawn.

Soil Enhancement

These are a series of products that may be added to a fertilization/weed control program that really dial in on the health of your soil. These products include humic acid (Increases water infiltration and water-holding capacity of soil), Root-Growth Stimulator (Increases rooting and decreases stress pressure), Liquid Aeration (Loosens topsoil and promotes deeper rooting), MicroGreene fertilizer (Stimulates roots and assists in deepening the topsoil layer under the lawn), and liquid D-Thatch (Helps break down built up thatch in the lawn that can prevent nutrients from reaching the soil.

**Pro-Tip: Did you know that, contrary to popular belief, thatch does not result from grass clippings being returned to the lawn? Thatch is actually a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves, and roots which accumulates between the layer of actively growing grass and the soil underneath. Returning grass clippings to the lawn (i.e. mulching/side discharge) can actually provide the lawn with up to 25% of the necessary nitrogen needed to maintain a healthy, lush lawn.**

Post-Emergent Weed Control Applications

These applications eradicate unwanted weeds that find their way into your lawn. These applications will vary based on specific need, weather conditions, and time of year. We use fewer full turf area applications along with a spot spray method as needed that greatly reduces the amount of stress on the turf.

Grub & Disease Control

Whether you have grubs, brown spots, fungi, or other issues in your lawn, we will work with you to generate a plan of attack to address the problem at hand and eradicate it as quickly and non-invasively as possible.

Core Aeration

This service helps your soil and turf by pulling "plugs" from the lawn. These plugs leave behind holes in the soil that help alleviate soil compaction, promote deep root growth, and increase nutrient absorption.

Over-seeding

This method is used to thicken lawns, which helps choke out weeds and create a lush carpet-like turf. This service is performed based on weather conditions and includes a starter fertilizer plus a slow-release fertilizer to promote proper, timely germination. Each customer will also be trained/assisted with proper watering techniques needed to maximize effectiveness.
